Durban – A tanker carrying diesel has reportedly scraped the bottom of the North Pier at the port of Durban. The incident took place in the early hours of this morning while the tanker was heading for Island View 8.

According to Transnet National Ports Authority the tanker damaged a ballast tank on the starboard side just in front of the accommodation quarters and began taking on water.

The ship has been ballasted to keep her upright and afloat. Two pilots are on board to keep port control informed of the situation and to advise the ship's master of local conditions.

The SA Maritime Safety Authority is investigating the matter.

According to the ports authority, there is no risk of pollution as the vessel is a double hull tanker. All cargo tanks are intact and the crew is unharmed.
